Why Take Piano Lessons as an Adult?

Maybe you're a busy parent who deserves some time for your own hobby. Maybe you're retired and looking to start a new pastime or pick up where you left off with your music years ago. Whatever your situation, piano lessons are great way to treat yourself. You'll get to tap into your creative side, carve out some "you" time, and enjoy the feeling of achieving new goals, all in a calm, no-pressure setting.

My Teaching

With adults, it's especially important for me to understand your situation in order to design the right approach for your lessons. Knowing your time constraints, your previous music experience, your goals, and your personality will shape what we cover in lessons and how we go about doing it. I'm very informal and conversational when teaching adults. I won't ask you to perform in front of people, unless that's something you want to do. My aim will be for you to see music as a positive in your life and to be able to do with it whatever you wish.

Practicing

I understand the many demands adults have on their time. Before committing to piano lessons, I encourage you to make sure you have the time for practicing outside of the actual lessons. I won't ever expect you to explain or apologize for a low-practice week. We can even laugh about it, because we all know that things come up and I've had plenty of those weeks too. What I will do is help you figure out a good practice pattern and encourage you to give this time to yourself. That way you can accomplish what you initially intended when you signed up for lessons. The way I see it, we're in this together!
"At 68 years old, I have begun to take piano lessons for the first time ever! Dave is an excellent mentor, patient teacher, and is able to tailor instructions to the student's specific needs and personality. He is simply outstanding. Many thanks, Dave."

"I feel fortunate to have Dave Howland as my piano instructor. As a retiree I was looking to improve skills from many years ago but also expand my love of music. Though he is a stellar pianist himself, he nonetheless works well with beginners, always providing support and encouragement without pressure. He listens carefully to what I want to get out of lessons, works with me on selecting music and sees beyond the notes on the page to providing many tips as well as the musicianship I am seeking. I can say without exception that working with Dave has greatly enriched my musical experience."
